Children Covering America

AmericaTakingAction.org announces "Children Covering America", a national campaign, geared toward the healing of children, allowing them to creatively express their feelings over recent world events through designing quilts to be donated to numerous recipients.

According to Sharilee Guest, Founder and President of AmericaTakingAction.org, "This project is designed to fulfill the five promises of Colin Powell's America's Promise, especially the 5th promise: Providing Opportunities to Serve. The added benefit at this difficult time in our nation's history is that it provides our youth an opportunity to think through their feelings, process the events and express themselves in a creative, worthwhile activity. This allows our children to begin the healing process."

The organization is inviting schools, after-school programs, scouting organizations, homeschoolers, parents and communities who work with children to get involved in this effort. They are asking every child across the country to design a quilting square depicting the love and support they feel for the victims in relationship to the September 11, 2001 tragedy. AmericaTakingAction.org believes that through this process, children are more likely to communicate their feelings while contributing to an important cause.

Parents and seniors are being encouraged to get involved by assisting the youth in joining the squares and finishing the quilt. Guest stated, "We believe that the senior generation could be a great strength and resource to our youth during this crisis and provide them with an opportunity to talk about what they are feeling, their fears, their hopes and their dreams for the future." This project provides an ideal situation to encourage this type of communication in a relaxed, safe environment while working on a project that will truly make a difference in the lives of others.

The goal of the campaign is to have 10,000 quilts completed by February 1, 2002 to be displayed by the schools/organizations at various locations locally during the 2002 Olympics in Utah. Quilts will then be sent to families and businesses affected, as well as shelters across America. The quilts will also be featured on a National On-line Display to recognize the efforts and contributions of the participating children. Details about the project, as well as registration information, can be found at www.americatakingaction.org/911.
